The Darkness Dash is a timed run not a race, of about 3 miles. It’s for members only. You can race it, or jog round with others to enjoy simply being on the Common at night. In 2025 it’s on Thursday 13 November; runners meet between 1900-1915 at Belgrave Hall. (Helpers – most of you will be asked to go to the Windmill instead, please look at the instructions we will send you.)

Running at night is an adventure and you should be aware of the hazards. You must bring a torch – whether a headtorch or a hand torch doesn’t matter (but NOT the torch on your mobile phone). Please make sure it’s got new batteries or is fully charged.

If you run regularly on the common and take part in the three-mile handicap, you will probably have run on the paths we will use but they will look different in the dark – you may need to run more slowly.

We advise participants to wear light coloured clothing and to bring a warm fleece or jacket to leave at the start – we ask you to stay until the last person finishes, so it can get cold. Please wear trail shoes if you have them, be prepared for slippery conditions, and bring a mobile if you can.

If you do not want to run, please consider helping, as this event needs more helpers than the Windmilers’ daytime events.  Please contact Claire on [email protected] to offer to help.

If you’ve not done this type of event before why not give it a try – we promise you’ll love it!
