Windmilers 5 x 5K Relays Sunday 29 Sept. 10am Windmill

We would like as many Windmilers as possible tp participate and all speeds are essential for us to make up he teams.

Note: theses relays will replace the usual Sunday club runs from the Windmill

Perhaps the key point about this Relay Race is that, alongside the chance to run a 5K race, it has been a big “social” success when we have held it in the past, mixing together Windmilers who may not usually run together or even meet eachother.
So the aim is to encourage as many Windmilers as possible to take part, slowest to fastest, youngest to oldest etc, whether they usually run at 9am, 9.30am or 10am on a Sunday (or don’t usually run on Sunday’s at all!). Obviously training schedules may mean that some members do not plan a 5K run into their schedule but for most of us this can done and participants can (e.g.) always run another 2 laps on their own (for a 10K) and can run at a set pace rather than their fastest pace if required.

The success of our previous 25K relay events both for athletic and social reasons has encouraged us to organise another relay on the same lines on Sunday 29th September from the Windmill. The race will start at approx. 10am but we would need you to register beforehand.

We designed this event to encapsulate many of the qualities that the Windmilers have been about over the years: participation, teamwork, fun, socialising, encouragement, fantastic surroundings – oh, and a bit of running!!!

We will arrange the teams to have a mix of running speeds – then they will be broadly similar in total time and the teams will not just to include your usual Windmiler friends.  Hence, we are asking you to enter well before the day if possible and we will put the teams together to facilitate this.  We may instigate a small handicap system to balance the teams so that the first team across the line is the winner.

The race will take place on the Common, from close to the Windmill.  Each runner will run a measured 5K course and the course will be based on our 3 mile handicap route.  Runners of ALL ABILITIES are ESSENTIAL and we are sure the usual Windmiler support for runners of all paces will take place.  Each team will probably take approximately 2 hours to complete the course but it would be good if team members are present throughout to support their team. As usual the route will be fully marshalled.

*** The usual Sunday runs will not take place on this day *** -  and so we would hope that as many people as possible will turn out to support this event whether you normally run the 10am Social or earlier runs.  This may well cause potential problems with parking and so please listen out to any pleas we make regarding this and wherever possible share cars, take public transport or park off the Common.  In addition, we may extend the celebrations in a local hostelry – again listen out for details.

Help: if you are unable to run but can help with the marshalling, then please let Jeff know (

Entries: These are possible right up to and including on the day but, if you can, we would be grateful if you could enter a.s.a.p., to enable us to put teams together and draw up the handicap.  If you subsequently have to drop out, please let us know immediately to allow time to re-adjust teams.
