Chillswim Coniston 5.25 Miles End to End

Race Date: Saturday, 04/09/2021
Race Distance: Other - Swim

Having enjoyed the Chillswim Ullswater End to End in July, a group of Windmilers decided to come back to the Lake District for the Ullswater event's older but shorter brother, the 5.25 mile long Coniston End to End. The event starts at the southern end of Coniston Water and follows mile buoys up the eastern side of the lake, passing to the right of Peel Island, one of the the inspirations for Wild Cat Island in Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, then continuing up the lake with a view of the Old Man of Coniston and its surrounding fells. Feed boats were placed at the half mile points with water, energy drink and sweets. Water temperature was around 18-19 degrees C, but with a cool air temperature out of the water many found it colder than expected. With a field of over 750 swimmers, it was a pleasant surprise around the four mile mark to see Pete swimming alongside me waving hello before he sprinted off toward the finish.
