Surrey Half

Race Date: Sunday, 08/03/2020
Race Distance: Half Marathon

I hate being late, and was getting anxious when the 07.28 Wimbledon to Woking train (full of runners) ground to a halt at Esher and stayed there. Apparently, the train hit something on the line and was kaput. All subsequent trains were cancelled. Some runners decided to go back from whence they came, while others teamed up for the 16-mile journey by taxi. By the time I got there, found the bag drop, got changed, went to the loo and found the start, everyone had taken off, and it was over half a mile before I caught up with the tail of the field. Otherwise, a perfectly fine, well organised, half on closed roads with some ups and downs. But, as in life, one made up for the other. Walking back to the station, the heavens opened and I got caught in a downpour, so hotfooted it to the nearby Woking Railway and Athletic Club to shelter from the rain. This is a members-only club but they let in CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) members. Established for railway workers, I asked the barman about the ‘Athletic’ in the Club’s title, and he told me it was the walk back to the bar for another pint. Quirky it may be, but they serve a fine drop of ale. By the time I’d enjoyed an excellent and refreshing pint of Whitstable Brewery’s Shucker’s Session Hoppy Pale, the rain had stopped and I went on my way.
