Vigo Runners Valentines 10M

Race Date: Sunday, 16/02/2020
Race Distance: 10 Miles

The start: Despite the breeze and damp our day started with a poignant tribute over the rugby club pa system, to Vigo Running Club’s late club President, whose nick-name appears on our finishers’ medals. It was followed by a prize-draw for the sought-after The Harvel 5 and fellow Windmiler, Graeme Hunter, and I were surprised to hear Kate Carter’s name drawn from the hat and announced! The race: Moments later, the mini cannon which has started previous races was replaced this year by a heart-starting pyrotechnic boom which then set us off for the race! A few minor course changes from last year made little difference to this challenging course that lived up to its "tough love" monica. Storm Dennis was still at work during the race (but mercifully not at its most potent); the outcome was a very wet course which meant grip on the steep, muddy, downhill sections was scarce and precious…The glorious views of last year from the top of The Downs were masked by rain and clusters of heavily dressed course marshals in high-viz were propping each other up in the wind. (This course can be very good for birdsong, but I couldn’t hear many of them for the wind; however I was most encouraged by a valiant skylark, unseeable up in the low cloud, determinedly singing against the storm!) The postscript: Nonetheless spirits were high for the event and after a jolly trot round the course, and a steamy hot shower to blast off some of the mud, Graeme, his friend, Sam, and I repaired to the lively, rugby club bar for a bacon & egg butty and to rehydrate. GH: “That’s one of the best courses I have run.” “I’m definitely doing it again, next year.” Hear, hear. Me too.
