Benidorm 10k

Race Date: Sunday, 24/11/2019
Race Distance: 10 Km

We joined eight Costa Blanca Striders (our running club in Spain) to enjoy the delights of the Benidorm 10k. Of 836 runners a fair proportion were Brits and we saw many familiar Club vests and shirts, and bumped into plenty of people we know. No surprise it’s so popular - a great 10k run, mostly along the seafront in Spain’s let-your-hair-down town. The course has changed since we last ran the event in 2017, and now takes in a longish uphill section. The organisers have adopted wider age categories for prizes, which was good news for us! Francesca was 1st in the F70 class and I came 2nd in the M75. Admittedly they weren’t the most hotly contested categories, but the demographic shape of running is undoubtedly changing - and the oldest person in this race was a British lady of 93, who got rapturous applause and loud cheering as she made her way up the final uphill stretch to the finish. The prizegiving ceremony with podium and much fanfare is more akin to the Olympics with huge cups + legs of jamon and wine for the fastest team winners. Great fun, well organised and all on a lovely sunny day.
