Firenze Marathon

Race Date: Sunday, 24/11/2019
Race Distance: Marathon

A great run around Florence, starting in front of the Duomo before heading west to the Parco delle Cascine, back along the Arno and over the Ponte Vecchio, then east of the city centre to run around the Campo di Marte station and the nearby stadium, popping into the athletic track for a run round three quarters of the track and then back in to the city centre to finish in front of the Duomo. Mostly flat, the only climbs being where the route dips into underpasses and one big bridge over the railway tracks. The route does a lot of doubling back on itself, especially the last six or so kilometres in the city where the route leads you towards the Duomo before veering away again. Good drinks stations en route with sweet tea, electrolyte and water available and also plenty of sponging stations if that's your thing. Worth noting also that the women's race was won by the UK's Jess Piasecki (née Coulson) in a marathon debut time of 2:25:29, third on the UK all-time list behind Paula Radcliffe and Mara Yamauchi. [Note: due to a suspected gas leak near the 40 km point, the route in the city centre was tweaked after the first 60 runners had passed leading to the route being slightly short for subsequent runners, so this is officially classed as a 'Short Marathon' for us value-for-money runners.]
