Hever Castle 1 mile warm up Swim

Race Date: Saturday, 28/09/2019
Race Distance: Swim - 1 Mile

A truly stunning venue and fabulously well organised. I did the event with my son Daniel and his girlfriend Nikki (plus wife Jo as loyal bag minder and cheerleader!). We did the Gauntlet half Ironman relay on the Sunday and I also did the one mile swim as a warm up on the Saturday. With the fact that the Gauntlet is considered Europe’s second hardest half Ironman course, the terrible weather conditions, unusual lake then narrow river swim course, reduced and hilly cycle and mud bath run course you cannot compare any legs with any other race or year, only with others doing the same event on the day. We were almost exactly spot on for the Gauntlet relay team average on every leg! The overall individual winner’s times were beyond ridiculous given the course conditions. The (relatively) slow time for the run for an elite athlete shows just how hilly and treacherous the cross country run conditions were. Swim (Julian) 00:39:46 Cycle (Daniel) 02:25:51 Run (Nikki) 02:15:27 In the Saturday one-mile warm up swim event (1600m) I was 19th out of 98 with a time of 30:22. Maybe not the best idea to have done this as I was clearly slower on the Sunday. A great family weekend in the end despite the biblically bad weather conditions!
