Sri Chinmoy Dashing Deer 5K

Race Date: Monday, 10/06/2019
Race Distance: 5 Km

The weather didn't effect the numbers, even people like me who signed-up at midday despite the horrible rain. Standing water on the course (Battersea Park) that we needed to avoid, but otherwise conditions weren't bad. Field included 50 Dulwich runners taking part in their club championship. Now I know the quality of these Sri Chinmoy fields so hung towards the back for the start. Never though have I experienced virtually an entire field blast off so quickly. I deliberately started to drop back as I could tell the pace was too hot for me, and despite that, my first pace check had me still at nearly 20 minute overall pace, way too quick for me. First six runners were sub 16. First lady 16:33 and 81 or the 139 runners sub 20. I was targeting 24:30 and a negative split. I achieved both, my fastest ever run with a negative split so that was good. Need to work on my "stealth" at the finish. I was chasing a Dulwich runner down from a distance and on our paces would have passed him. As he said afterwards he heard my coming (my breathing!) and picked up his pace in the last 20m to pip me by a second; another 10m or so and I would have had him! Good fun though.
