Weald Challenge Half Marathon

Race Date: Sunday, 09/06/2019
Race Distance: Half Marathon

Actually stated by the organisers to be 13.6 miles. Starting in Muddles Green, Chiddingly in the middle of nowhere north of Eastbourne this small friendly race heads north up one long distance trail towards the Ashdown Forest and comes back via another. There is also a 50k Ultra version which actually reaches the forest, which Lindsay did. Although some is on country roads, most is around fields, across fields of wheat, through woodland, through hedges and nettles and brambles(!)(we did wonder why some competitors had long tights on when it was quite warm), through kissing gates, and over stiles (lots and lots of stiles - some of them quite wobbly and about to fall apart!). Conditions underfoot are rather 'technical' and merit close attention, but thankfully were dry today. So it is lovely and beautiful and scenic and close to nature.....perhaps too close on some occasions as there were several falls and a number of competitors finished bloodied. The two feed stations on the route are however very well stocked, including gels, fruit and several kinds of cake, biscuit and crisps. Ex Windmiler Bruce Chessel also took part and finished 52nd in 2:03:22. Katy took the 1st V50 Ladies Prize. And everyone goes home with a very nice hand-made mug as well as a medal (and lots of cake)(and there is a BBQ at the finish too).
