Hutton Roof Fell Race

Race Date: Saturday, 26/05/2018
Race Distance: 7 Miles

To wear the Windmilers vest in a Lakeland or Dales fell race is akin to the eponymous hero, Crocodile Dundee, in those New York scenes. However, rather than being armed with a machete-sized blade, I have a soft, southern accent and rosy cheeks. You hear occasional chuckles, always meant in friendly exchange, over the fell training found amongst the Wombles of Wimbledon. This is ammunition indeed as the first ascent approaches! For anyone planning a foray during the Bank Holiday weekend next year, Hutton Roof is the perfect novice fell race. Lose your fell virginity on this flagged course with only 1,300 feet of ascent and plenty of trail sections. The geology is the Dales limestone and attached to the race is a very child-oriented little fair, with games, face-painting and a bouncy castle. The village/hamlet of Hutton Roof makes enough cake to perform a modern-day miracle of large-scale feeding. My legs had recovered rather well from the NDW50 and this was the perfect antidote to ultra fatigue.
