Run Gatwick Half Marathon

Race Date: Sunday, 13/05/2018
Race Distance: Half Marathon

The inaugural running of this British Airways sponsored Half, with associated 5K and kids run, based out of Southgate Park in Crawley. For me at least, the start had the feel of the Gatwick experience - running late because of rail engineering works and a slow replacement bus I was already a bit stressed before the long queue for bag drop off and a confusing and crowded departure area. Fortunately the bag marshalls managed to work out a way to speed up drop off and hopefully they can sort out the wave pens to be more organised in future events. The race itself was an enjoyable closed road run, with a seemingly continuous gentle descent for most of the race. The route heads out to run along the south side and west end of Gatwick Airport with planes taking off overhead, then it climbs over a short sharp hill around the 14K/9M point before starting the descent back through Crawley to Southgate Park with a slight uphill finish. Lots of friendly stewards on route and a good in-run drinks service.
