Antwerp Marathon

Race Date: Sunday, 22/04/2018
Race Distance: Marathon

The temperature maxed out at 27C in Antwerp on the day but there were regular water and sportsdrink stations. The day is combined with the far more popular 10 Mile race in the afternoon - the marathon field is quite small under 3000 but the 10 Miles has nearer 30,000 participants. The marathon starts across the river from the centre, fairly soon goes under the Schelde in a long tunnel then is basically one lap around the suburbs before heading into the centre to finish on the Grote Markt. Fairly pleasant and flat apart from the odd tunnel and in parkland for several km near the finish. Because of Virgin's very recent change to the London GFA I felt compelled to try to stay with the 3.15 pacers but this didn't last past the 10 mile mark. At that stage they still had a scrum of runners with them but Katy tells me that by the finish they had lost them all!
