Wansfell Fell Race

Race Date: Wednesday, 27/12/2017
Race Distance: Other

A beautiful day in the Lakes: blue skies, sunshine and snow on the top of the fells. 145 people had turned up to run off the Christmas excesses. The race was 4km but with 405m of ascent, setting off up a steep lane out of Ambleside. Then it was over a stile and up an even steeper fell. The route choice was either rocky steps with icy patches, or steep slippy grass on either side of the steps. Eventually I reached the top and, after a quick glance at the amazing views, it was straight back down the same steep slope. The lack of similar hills in Wimbledon definitely gives the locals an advantage on the descents. I managed to pick up a bit of pace once we got back on the tarmac and, after negotiating the double obstacle of four foot of sheet ice on the road followed by a cattle grid, managed to take a couple of local vests on the finish line.
